CROSSING CULTURES
At Afridi Gallery
24-30 June 2021
Sweden has had links with the central Asia and the Ottoman empire since the early 16th century. In 1897 Marta Maas Fjetterstrom visited the General Art and Industrial Exhibition of Stockholm and the pavilion of the collector Fredrik Robert Martin filled with his Oriental carpets. She was inspired. for this exhibition we are presenting examples of her work and of two 20th C Swedish textile designers, Barbro Nilsson and Sigvard Bernadotte, together with silk embroideries from Central Asia and the 17th century Ottoman Empire. In each we see representations of the Gardens of Earthly Paradise.
